Our love for Cocker Spaniels began
back in the early-70's when Becki got her first black cocker from the Cobb
County, GA, animal shelter. Skipper was a wonderful dog although
"typical" of the oversized, poorly-bred cocker generally sold by pet
stores or the "make a buck" breeders. Skipper convinced Debbie that a
cocker was the right pet for her family with two youngsters (then 3 and 5), and
she found Sadie from a hobby-breeder in south Florida. Sadie personified the
cute SMALL, typy pet where Skipper was not all that a cocker should be - in
looks AND in temperament! Over the years, we learned firsthand many of the
diseases and health problems that plagued our pets. As years have passed, we've
realized that while still frequently found in the breed, many of these diseases
are not "the norm".
Years later, after several pet cockers Debbie found she wanted to get involved
in showing and breeding good-quality and healthy cockers. In her quest, Debbie
found Mary Ann Meekins of Shalimar Kennel in Flagler Beach, Fl, and bought
"Sara" (CH Shalimar's Midnite Serenade, TT). And not to be outdone,
Becki was soon bitten by "the bug" and switched her allegiance from
show horses to show dogs (after all, you just CAN'T housetrain a horse and
they're he__ on your bed!). Visiting Shalimar Kennels in Florida again, we
bought littermates, "Rebel" (Am&Int'l CH Shalimar's Rebel Rouser)
and "Perry" (CH Shalimar's Imperator, CGC, TT). All of the
above-mentioned dogs are now waiting for us at the rainbow bridge, but their
memories and legacy live on in our hearts and in their progeny, over 30 DAZLIN
champions.
